A Macclesfield gym are celebrating after raising almost £3000 for charity, despite the ongoing cost of living crisis.

Gymophobics Macclesfield, a local branch of a national brand, is located on Sunderland Street.

Staff and members recently came together to take on the Starlight Walk 2023 for Macclesfield good cause East Cheshire Hospice.

The town centre gym smashed their fundraising goal almost five times over.

Gymphobics Member Pam Webster also works for East Cheshire Hospice, so did an inspirational talk for competitors before the walk.

Macclesfield Nub News went to the Sunderland Street gym to find out how they achieved it.

Three of their staff, Tracy Turner, Sara Sutton and Jane I'anson, met for a chat.

"We decided to do the Starlight Walk as one of our members called Pam Webster works for East Cheshire Hospice," said Tracy.

"So we know how difficult it has been for them in the past few years. They have worked so hard, and have to do a lot of self-funding for it.

"We always try and do something for charity, whether it is Macmillian, but we recently decided to do our bit for a local one."

As of publication, about 80 people pledged their support to their Starlight Walk fundraiser for East Cheshire Hospice.

"Just last year I raised £700 for East Cheshire Hospice on my own, so to have beaten that as a team feels amazing," said Sara.

"A lot of ladies here have had relatives who have had to use East Cheshire Hospice, so the cause is close to them.

"We are so lucky in this area to have East Cheshire Hospice on our doorstep."

The current total stands at £2737, which is over six times their initial target.

"It is really humbling to have raised that much for the charity, as we are in a cost of living crisis," added Tracy.

"So any donation even if it was just a pound, it is incredible people were that generous in these times."

Ladies of all abilities took part, with 22 being members of the gym that joined four Gymphobics Macclesfield staff. The walk lasted for two hours.

"We're so proud of all our members for their donations", said Jane.

"Thank you to the event organisers and anyone else who donated to help make it happen.

"It makes a big difference to support a local good cause.

"Gymphobics is somewhere you can feel safe, and socialise," explained Tracy.

"We all have a coffee together after, and we support each other in what we do in our everyday lives. It is a great place to make friends.

"Our gym is great for women as we have one-to-one instruction on every visit, as there's one of us here all the time.
