There is relief in Macclesfield as a fire which raged in our town overnight has now been extinguished, and crews are currently using hose reel jets to dampen down at the scene.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue service first arrived at the Calamine Street fire at 3:53am, which started in a commercial building with an unknown cause.

Six fire engines have helped tackle the blaze, including two from Macclesfield, and one from Bollington.

The former kitchen warehouse fire could have been started by an electrical appliance, but no official reason for the incident has been disclosed yet.

The crews split the building into four sectors and firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, are using two hose reel jets and three main jets to extinguish the fire.

Some used an aerial platform to help tackle the fire from above.

Police are in attendance at the scene and a cordon was set up as a precaution, which remains as of 11am.

Macclesfield residents in the nearby area are advised to keep their windows and doors closed, with ash and smoke also blowing eastwards towards Macclesfield Golf Club.

Thankfully, there are no reports of any casualties at this time.

The crew have also isolated the electricity to the site, to prevent any further flames.

A cordon remains in place as a precautionary measure.

Windmill Street and Calamine Street were closed until 11am as a result of the incident and a small number of nearby homes have also been evacuated.

Firefighters are also using a thermal imaging camera to check for any hotspots.

Fire investigation work is now taking place at the scene, with both firepeople and coppers investigating.

Cheshire Police are appealing for witnesses and video footage following a large fire at an industrial warehouse in Macclesfield.

Officers are keen to hear from anyone with any information which may aid their enquiries.

Detective Sergeant Robert McCubbin, of Macclesfield Local Policing Unit, said: "This investigation is in its early stages and at the current time it's too soon to say what the exact cause was.

"The warehouse involved is located at the junction of Calamine Street and Windmill Street and as part of our enquiries we are keen to hear from anyone who was in the area who believes they may have witnessed anything suspicious.

"The same goes for anyone with any CCTV or dashcam footage which may aid our investigation."

Anyone with any information in relation to the incident is asked to call Cheshire Police on 101, quoting IML 1063059 or give the details via this webpage.

Alternatively, information can be reported anonymously, via Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.
