Macclesfield's member of parliament has responded to the egg he received to the head in Macclesfield on Sunday.

Three hours in to the Macclesfield FC street party celebrations, David Rutley MP had a raw egg thrown at him outside Macclesfield Town Hall.

On Monday, Cheshire Police told Macclesfield Nub News a statement regarding the incident.

Now, Mr Rutley has spoke out on the attack:

"It was a shock to have experienced this type of behaviour," he told Macclesfield Nub News.

"This is not something that you expect working in the local community, particularly while attending an event to celebrate the promotion of Macclesfield FC and the amazing contribution the club is making to our community.

"The incident sought to detract from the event and the person involved showed a complete lack of respect for all that has been achieved over recent years. Stunts like this are completely unacceptable.

"I have been honoured to serve the people of Macclesfield as the local MP over the last 13 years and fortunately this type of action is rare.

"On the whole in our communities, local politicians, political parties and local residents carry out a free and fair exchange of views with respect and courtesy – in marked contrast to Sunday's incident.

"Sadly, with the rise of social media, there has been a tendency towards greater polarisation and a lack of tolerance in society.

"We need to protect against this, respect democratic values and work to create an environment that encourages more people to get involved in the community and feel safe while taking part in local elections, like those ahead on 4th May."

A swear word was said to have been shouted at Mr Rutley when the egg was launched. It is presumed the incident will not chance his intentions to stand again for parliament at the next General Election.
