Macclesfield's MP has revealed why he decided to vote in support of Prime Minister Boris Johnson, following the PM's recent confidence vote.

Speaking two days after the vote took place, Macclesfield MP David Rutley released the following statement to Macclesfield Nub News.

"The Prime Minister has rightly sincerely apologised in the House of Commons for the events that took place in No 10 which were investigated by Sue Gray," he said.

"Significant changes have also been made to the organisation and management of Downing Street and the Cabinet Office.

"As President Putin continues his appalling assault on Ukraine and global inflationary pressures increase, I don't believe that this is the time for a leadership contest within the Conservative Party.

"The Prime Minister is delivering on the country's priorities: building a stronger economy, tackling cost of living challenges and providing new defensive support to Ukraine. That's why I voted in favour of the Prime Minister in Monday's vote. He continues to have my support in these important tasks and in working to restore trust in these difficult times."

Boris Johnson won the June 6 vote with the backing of 211 Conservative MP, including Mr Rutley. This represented 59% of the total. Out of 359 MPs, 148 (41%) voted for him to leave 10 Downing Street.

David Rutley has been Macclesfield MP for 12 years and one month.

The 61-year-old Conservative was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Work and Pensions by Boris Johnson in September 2021.
