Macclesfield: Possible powers for police to take alcohol from street drinkers

A consultation which could grant powers to allow police to confiscate alcohol from street drinkers in Macclesfield has been launched.

Cheshire East Council have launched a public consultation - just for Macclesfield - which will allow officers to remove bottles or alcohol if being consumed in public.

Unless there is strong public objection within the newly-launched survey, the allocation of these powers will likely go ahead.

Please note: This will not apply during the Treacle Market, or in outdoor seating for our town's bar and restaurants. It regards those who open and drink cans and bottles of booze on Macclesfield streets, or those who drink and loiter.

Cheshire East Council said: "The section of this draft PSPO which relates to alcohol consumption is not an 'alcohol banning order', but allows authorised officers to request alcohol sealed or unsealed is handed to them upon request."

"There are exemptions to areas where the consumption of alcohol has been authorised e.g. licensed premises and organised, licensed events/activities."

Cheshire Police have been contacted for comment.
