Macclesfield: Vintage Joy Division record sells for almost three grand
A Joy Divison record sold for almost three grand at the weekend.
Merseryside auctioneers Omega Auction sold a clean and original copy of their debut EP on Saturday for £2800.
An often forgot piece of lore in the history of Macclesfield and Salford band Joy Division is what they released before their two studio albums.
In 1978, the band which featured Macclesfield residents Ian Curtis and Stephen Morris released their first EP called An Ideal for Living.
It was a limited pressing for the then-unknown band. The four-track EP would see the band hone their craft before the release of their seminal debut album Unknown Pleasures one year later.
The EP, was more punk rock than post punk, featured a sketch of a Hitler Youth drummer boy on the front cover. This references the original Nazi-connotations of the Joy Division name.
This however did not prevent the EP from success, having sold out just three months after it was released. And it is from this original pressing where the recently-sold record comes from.
Released in June 1978 on Enigma records, the EP is rare for its scarcity, but also as it is not available to listen to on streaming services.
