Thousands of teens in Macclesfield received their GCSE results today.

And Macclesfield Nub News has reached out to all schools and academies who held the exams to find out how they did.

In no particular order, here's how our local schools did on GCSE results day.

The Macclesfield Academy

The Macclesfield Academy of Park Lane said: "A huge well done to our Class of 2023 GCSE students who have earned a fantastic set of results."

"It's perhaps easy to forget that this year group were impacted significantly by the pandemic and went on to complete a great deal of extra work to catch up with their studies. Through after school sessions, holiday school and hours of dedication they have a set of results to make them and their parents very proud."

Many students will go on to the adjacent Macclesfield College.

Mr Galvin, Headteacher of The Macclesfield Academy said "We talk about our students putting 'learning above all' to achieve academic excellence and this is exactly what our pupils have done. We worked as a team, staff colleagues and students, to maximise grades and give students aspirational choices for Post 16 and beyond. We are incredibly proud of what they have achieved."

Mr Galvin also made mention of the work completed in partnership with parents to support the children through the stresses and strains of the exam period. "It's working together; parents, learners and school, that we can make great things happen. Thank you to all our families who went above and beyond for their child."

In the theme of partnerships, Mr Galvin went on to comment on the excellent work completed by our student's Primary Schools. He said "the results our students achieved today are a result of more than eleven years of hard work, by a huge number of professionals, both teaching and non-teaching colleagues at Primary schools and The Macclesfield Academy. We know that strong links between schools mean students get better results and yet again we have seen how strong our professional relationships are with local Primary schools".

Particular mentions were reserved for: Anya Wolverson who achieved eight GCSEs at Grade 9, one at Grade 8 and one Grade 7, Joe Warren who achieved four GCSEs at Grade 9, two at Grade 8 and 2 at Grade 7 and Rachel Smith who achieved four GCSEs at Grade 9, two at Grade 8 and three at Grade 7, all of whom will be going on to continue their studies at A Level.

The Fallibroome Academy

The Fallibroome Academy in Upton Priory also had reason to celebrate, claiming their GCSE results are 'amongst the best ever for Fallibroome'

The Priory Lane place of education told Macclesfield Nub News: "We are delighted with these outcomes as we know how hard our students worked throughout the last two years and especially in the lead up to their examinations. Many of our students have made remarkable progress since joining us in Year 7."

The following students returned results that were particularly impressive in this respect and have agreed to have their name published to celebrate this achievement: Charlie Ackerley, George Ackerley, Fin Budd, Harry Butler, Maddalena Cagol, Keshav Ganesh, Ruby Gossage, Mia Hagar, Evie Hogden, Oscar Jackson-Nocker, Ryley Johnson, Falak Khan, Archie Leech, Harvey Lewis, Natasha Oldham, Emily Pearson-Jackson, Tom Platt, Maisie Priest, Emily Sparks-Welsh, David Stringer, Annabelle Rayer, Rachel Ryan, Ben Waller, Eschie Walsh, Fin Williamson.

"We also saw 32 students achieve the remarkable feat of returning the highest grades (9/8/7) in nine or more subjects. This sort of attainment takes an enormous amount of hard work and commitment and is especially impressive during a period of significant change in the examination system."

This list of high achievers includes: Henry Banks, Catriona Beynon, Shane Blackwell, Keshav Ganesh, Eva Germaney, Sian Gray, Adam Herbert, Yuan-Yi Ho, Akito Irvine, Oscar Jackson-Nocker, Maisie Jones, Eleanor Knott, Thomas Murphy, Natasha Oldham, Annabelle Rayer, Rachel Ryan, Eliza Seear-Nixon, Benjamin Siriwardena, Emily Sparks-Welch, Joanna Tookey, Isabella Turner, Adam Wetherall, Georgia Buckley, Aaron Campbell, Sofia Coyne, Noah Dooley, Yasmin Harputlu, Evie Hogden, Nivedita Mahich, Lacey Nicholls, and Lewis Small.

Fallibroome Headteacher Francis Power said: "We were delighted to celebrate our GCSE results with our Y11 students today."

"It is easy to forget that these students endure a huge amount of disruption due to Covid issues when they were in Y8 and Y9 so they have had to work extremely hard to reach these standards this year. Despite these challenges, this cohort have returned results that are among the best that we have ever seen at Fallibroome. At the same time, our Y11 students have contributed enormously to the life of the school over the last five years.

"Many have represented the school with distinction in our sports teams, performing arts productions and other extracurricular pursuits. They have also acted as role models for our younger students and have certainly set a high standard for future generations to emulate in the years to come. We thank all our Y11 students for their positive contribution to Fallibroome during their time here. We wish them every success in the next stage in their education and look forward to welcoming many of them back into our Sixth Form in the next few weeks."

All Hallows Catholic College

All Hallows Catholic College of Brooklands Avenue reported 'another excellent set of GCSE results'. The atmosphere in College today 'was one of real joy and celebration'.

Principal, Mr Tim Beesley, said, "I am delighted with these results, and am very proud of what our students have accomplished."

"They have worked incredibly hard and have deserved to achieve so well.

"I would like to thank their parents and carers for all the support that they have given the College. We also recognise the commitment and dedication of our staff, who have done so much to help prepare the young people for the next stage of their lives.

Sam Graves and Evie Ashton smile for the camera.

"We look forward to continuing to work with the vast majority of them as they join us in the Sixth Form."

Tytherington School

It is thumbs up from Ben McDermott of Tytherington School on GCSE Results Day.

Tytherington School on Manchester Road said: "The students have done very well despite the disruption of the last few years as a result of the pandemic. We are very proud of the way the class of 2023 have risen to the challenge."

"A number of students achieved seven or more grades at 7+ and we would like to take this opportunity to formally congratulate them on their exceptional achievement (* indicates those students that achieved Grades 8 or 9 across all of their subjects): (asterisk denotes A*)

Dot Bodimeade, Alexander Bogentoft, Lucy Cazalet, Edie Chadwick*, Eve Chrimes, Edward Donohoe, Iolo Foat, Nasrin Hatna*, Emily Holmes, Isaac Hudson, Daniel Jordan, Olive Meggitt, Yasmin Morgan*, Em Nicholson, JJ Raw, William Roberts, Imogen Strickland, Charlotte Sturley, Mia Sugden, Leila Windsor.

As you can imagine, behind the headlines, there are always many stories of students who have had to overcome significant challenges and hurdles over the course of their studies. There are some great stories of individual success, with many students making huge progress over the course of their time at Tytherington School.

Lucy Cazalet

"We would like to share a handful of students who exemplify our commitment to producing A* youngsters.

  • Iolo Foat achieved exceptional grades across the board. He managed to juggle fantastic academic performance with being an active member of the Student Parliament. He has also worked closely with a project in Macclesfield called YouthFed helping to design a new youth centre in Macclesfield. Iolo is also a cadet and has always played a key role in school ceremonies such as Remembrance Day.
  • Megan Mitchell is an exceptionally hard-working student. Alongside her studies, Megan has been involved in extra-curricular Drama – both the summer productions and the Christmas Pantomimes, taking the leading role of Scrooge this year. She is also a dedicated member of the cadets and wears her uniform with pride at key occasions in school, such as Remembrance Day. Megan has also been a worthy past winner of the Rotary award for her charity work. We are delighted that she achieved so well in her GCSEs.
  • Charlotte "Lottie" Dean-Lee has displayed wonderful grit and determination in her studies and we are delighted that she has made incredible progress. Alongside her studies, Lottie is a keen rugby player for Macclesfield Rugby Club and also regularly trains at a local boxing club.

"It was also the first time that the school received GCSE results for Classics and Mandarin GCSEs."

Emmanuel Botwe, Headteacher, was delighted when he saw the results. He said: "Whilst we are delighted that many students have achieved well this year, what pleases us most is that we know that this cohort are a fabulous group of A* people. In very tough circumstances, they have done incredibly well.

Tythy pupils Moses Salas Oli Nunn and Jack Rankin.

"It is easy to forget that the pandemic heavily disrupted their secondary school experience so they have done extraordinarily well. They are an example of what can be achieved if you combine hard work with passion and enthusiasm. We are excited to see what this special year group will achieve in the Sixth Form."

King's School in Macclesfield

Left to right: Annabel Hawkins, who got 10 9s and one 8 grade and eventually wants to read Computer Science at Cambridge. Ali Hussain, who got eight 9s, two 8s and one 7. Pianist and chorister Margi Javle, who got nine 9s and one 8 and wants to go on to be a doctor. Sebastian Fitzgerald, who got eight 9s and two 8s and wants to be a linguist. Duke of Edinburgh awardee Tasha Clark who got nine 9s and one eight and wants to be a lawyer. Big-hearted Lucy Hancock who got eight 9s, two eights and a six and wants to train as a nurse. Daisy Webb who got eight 9s and three 8s and wants to to study Medicine at Cambridge, and keen horse woman Freya Ambrey-Brosnahan, from Langley, who got eight 9s and two 8s and wants to read Law at Oxford.

King's School students were ecstatic after bucking the national trend on GCSE results day.

As examiners raised the threshold for top grades there had been a nationwide downturn inresults, but not at the top Macclesfield school.

Results were up on last year and the best since 2014. Overall, 43% of all grades were at 9/8 (A*); 64% of grades were at 9-7 (A*-A); over 81% of grades were 9-6 (A*-B); a third of pupils got at least 9 x 9-7s (A*/A); and three quarters of pupils got a 9/8 (A*) in at least one subject.

Jason Slack, King's Head of Foundation, said: "We all feel incredibly proud of this year's GCSE students. Their results represent the best externally awarded grades for nine years and are fully deserved by a committed cohort, particularly against a national picture of a significant decline in the number of top grades.

"We believe our inspirational setting and stimulating, highly professional teaching have helped our young people to reach the highest academic standards, but we appreciatetheir strength of character and hard work are the major factors. I have no doubt they will go on to greatness in the future."

Some of King's young people produced truly exceptional results and pictured are those available on the day who had at least nine 9 or 8 grades or A*.

Beech Hall School and The Fermain Academy have also been contacted for their results.
