Macclesfield paint shop to celebrate their 35th anniversary

By Alex Greensmith 27th Jul 2023

A Macclesfield paint store is celebrating their 35th year in business.

Painters Supply Limited, of 5 Chelford Road, has survived eight prime ministers, three recessions and the recent Broken Cross roadworks.

The shop sells paint cans, pots, wallpapers and decorating sundries. Anything you need for home decorating, PSL will sell it.

Mark Le Moignan started the company 35 years ago, but his expertise in paint goes back even longer.

"Before I started the shop I was a self-employed painter and decorator," he said.

"We used to be called Broken Cross Paints, but rebranded to Painters Supply Limited, we're still the same company after all these years.

"We do a lot of paint mixing, of major brands and hold a full range of colours in stock."

Mark mans the shop with colleague Derek Burton. The store comes with their own customer parking spaces.

They can mix over 20,000 bespoke colours, across three different can sizes, from many leading suppliers.

Here's what Mark had to say when questioned what he believes sets Painters Supply Limited apart from big chain competitors like Macclesfield's Wickes or B&Q stores.

"We can offer advice," explained Mark.

"We can ask you about your project, what you want to do, and how you want to do it.

"We can recommend the products required to purchase, and advise you every step of the way.

"We have a larger range, the majority of paints we can mix in three pack sizes. A litre, two-and-a-half and a five-litre.

"Whereas a lot of national chains offer you just two-and-a-half litres, take it or leave it. So it would cost you more to purchase this way, whereas you'd save with us.

"But buying through us you can firstly buy better quality paint, and only buy the quantity of paint you need.

They also do small sample pots from £3.50. (Image - Alexander Greensmith / Macclesfield Nub News)

"There is a massive difference between trade quality paint, and retail quality paint.

"We sell the former. You can do a job in just two or three coats as opposed to five or six, and achieve a better finish.

"We have customers who come in and ask why their paint isn't working that they normally use, they try mine, it can cost them a bit more but they are using less paint to get the job done.

"They say our stuff is brilliant.

"With us, you can buy the paint you need to do the job. As we have more options in sizes, which as well as being more economical means there is less waste.

"If you look around town, there aren't many businesses who have been here for 35 years.

"A lot don't realise how hard it is. It takes a long time to build up a reserve of stock, capital and customers."

Mark lives just five minutes away from the shop, which is another ace up his sleve when it comes to his fast and reliable customer service. (Image - Alexander Greensmith / Macclesfield Nub News)

When asked for the secret to PSL's longevity, Mark said: "Knowledge, and having products to sell so when people come in and say 'Have you got such and such', the answer is 'yes'.

"So they walk out with the product, satisfied and could come back again.

"What we want to do in the future is target more local customers, and make them aware that there is a local independent shop that can service their needs."

A broad stock range means there's more chance of finding the exact shades, products and advice you want for your home or other project. (Unlike chained stores, PSL are in a position to advise, and they have been doing so for decades.)

Furthermore, you don't have to wait for it to arrive through the post or send it back if it is wrong like what could happen when ordering online.

Mark does have an web shop called Painters Supply Online, but for the best customer service around why not head into his Broken Cross store?

Tradespeople and the general public are the backbone of Mark's customerbase.

New products for his 35th year in business include a Craig & Rose mixing system, Bedec Multi Surface Paint, and Sandbox Exterior Paint Systems for wood, metal and masonry.

His brushes start from 50p to £30, depending on the task at hand.

"A really good quality brush has a nice finish, and you can reuse it time and time again," revealed Mark.

"It is the same with rollers.

"We sell all the brush cleaning kits, storage systems and even spray paints.

"Myself and Derek live not far away and we're always there to pick up the phone [01625 502121].

"We describe ourselves as 'not a big shop, but definitely a super store'."
