New construction department building approved at Macclesfield College
There's good news for construction students at Macclesfield College, a brand new building will be made to teach the subject.
Back in February, Macclesfield College applied for a new detached building for their construction department, as reported on by Macclesfield Nub News.
Eight months later, these plans have been approved.
When requested for comment from Macclesfield Nub News, the Park Lane place of education said in a statement: "Macclesfield College has a strong focus on curriculum expansion and delivering all skills linked closely to employer demand."
"The forecast of the Construction Skills Network (CSN) 2021-25, published by CITB, is that the industry will need to recruit an additional 217,000 new workers just to meet demand by 2025.
"Macclesfield College has seen a significant increase in demand for these courses for both full-time programmes and Apprenticeships. The new area will give our students a real working environment to get them ready to go onto Apprenticeships and direct employment in this growing industry."
According to a planning document published on the date of approval earlier this week, Works will take place between Monday to Friday inclusive – 08:00 to 21:30.
Concerns were raised by an Environmental Health Officer over an unknown impact the new building will have on Park Lane School, however, this did not stop the new construction facility from being approved.
The same professional rose concerns over noise pollution from construction tools (to be used by students that are taught once the building is complete, not by the builders building the new department).
Park Lane School echoed both of the above points in their representation.
A Nature Conservation Officer also observed that the planting of native species hedgerows should be incorporated into the plans.
A planning officer said: the "[sic] new development is of an appropriate size, scale and design that is commensurate to the character of the area in which it would be situated, whilst championing higher quality design to enhance and improve the wider borough."
Rachel Kay CEO and Principal said "We're really excited to have secured planning permission and hope to have the much needed facility operational post-Easter 2024, giving our current students the opportunity to experience the new learning environment."
David Rutley, MP for Macclesfield commented "During my recent visit, I had the opportunity to see the construction department building in its current format and could see how well-used it is.
"The approved planning permission will give the college the chance to elevate an already excellent programme and enable students to access state-of-the art facilities – I look forward to seeing the finished building."
