For some in Macclesfield, it is a tradition as sacrosanct as Christmas itself.

But you will not be able to get a Christmas tree from Macc Forest this year.

It is as the company who chops down the festive firs lost their licence to fell them.

Macclesfield Forest Christmas Trees revealed the news on Facebook: "We write this message with a heavy heart as unfortunately our lease hasn't been renewed."

"Therefore we will no longer be selling Christmas trees."

"We want to take this opportunity to thank you all for your custom and loyalty over the years and we hope you all have a wonderful Christmas. From Michael, Sue and all the staff."

If you still want to support a local business to get your tree, smaller garden centres like Prestbury Plant and Garden and Fairways Garden Centre in Macclesfield will have to up their ante in stock supply somehow.

One devastated Macclesfield Forest Christmas Trees customer said: "Oh no my mum is 90 years old. She has always had a Christmas tree from yours. She loves getting it from you.

"This can't happen your the heart of Macclesfield and the surrounding area for people to get their trees.

"Not good news to here as well with everything else going on around us."

The HGV crisis is also stalling the delivery of plastic Christmas trees from China, so combined with today's news, it will be harder than ever to get a tree this year.

One Macclesfield mum was distraught, and said "This is so sad, we've been bringing our daughters to pick a tree since they were born, one of our favourite Christmas traditions."

Macclesfield Nub News has contacted United Utilities - landowner of Macc's Royal Forest - for comment.
