Who is the most Wikipedia'd person from Adlington?

By Alex Greensmith 18th Oct 2021

We can reveal the most famous person from the Macclesfield village of Adlington.

It is as an interactive map has totted up who is the most-searched-for person on Wikipedia from thousands of places across the country.

Website The Pudding has created the map of the UK, replacing place names with their 'most Wikipedia-ed' resident.

We've previously revealed the most popular for Macc, Bolly and Prestbury village. But Adlington also has enough famous folk to make the map.

This person could be someone who was born in, lived or has connections to the place.

So drumroll, please...

Martin Edwards is the most famous person from Adlington.

Edwards was born on the old St Mary's Services Hospital, which was inside Adlington Hall on Mill Lane.

He left the Macclesfield area at age 13 to go to boarding school, opting for Cokethorpe in Oxfordshire.

After working in the food industry, he was elected to the board of Manchester United at age 25, in 1970.

His father, who was chairman, died in 1980. This made Martin the chairman of the football club at the age of 35 - which was very young for a chairman at the time.

He was part of the team that spearheaded Sir Alex Ferguson's appointment 1986, which led to the most successful period in the club's history.

Edwards was chairman for eight seasons in which United won the Premier League title.

His decisions included staying loyal to Ferguson during a turbulent period in the late 80s, and breaking the UK national transfer record multiple times.

The Adlington-born as forced to resign after a series of sex scandals in 2002. The first of which was a police caution following a peeping incident at the Mottram Hall Hotel, near Macclesfield.

He would later be accused of using a prostitute, and faded from the public eye.

This ended his official 32 year association with Manchester United.

The father-of-two sold his shares in the club one year later, and these days sits on the board of a technology company in Northwich.

The 76-year-old still lives in Cheshire.
