A country pub just a few miles away from Macclesfield is to gain a new carpark.

The Ship Inn, in Wincle, is to install a carpark to the left of the pub.

The pub used to have a carpark, before it was replaced with outdoor decking to allow them to serve customers outside during COVID-19 restrictions.

Now, the carpark has returned and has benefits over its previous iteration.

Macclesfield Nub News went to the pub, six miles from Macclesfield town centre, to find out more.

"There will be between six and seven spaces in the new carpark," said Christine Hartley, who co-runs The Ship Inn with partner Jim.

"In the long-run, it will be more beneficial to our customers having somewhere to park all year round.

"The decking we found was used well through the summer, but not in the winter months.

"I think it is nicer for customers to have the option to park off-road, and feel their car is safe. And it is safer for the general public as well.

"The fact where we are on Barlow Hill, I do feel a lot of our elderly customers would benefit more than having a carpark as opposed to having to walk up or down a hill to get to us."

The decking wood has not gone to waste. The wood has gone to a man who is planting trees in the local area, who is a regular in the pub.

The carpark is the latest addition the Hartley's have added into the pub since they took over this time last year, from a new menu, new barstools, and table lamps.

They are also looking at redoing the toilets soon, with the help of the brewer JW Lees.

"They are the ones that have allowed these changes to happen, they are very supportive of everything that we do," told Christine.

New lighting and signage will accompany the carpark, with proper linage for the bays.

The new carpark will be ready to use by Friday, May 3. Just in time for the Bank Holiday weekend.

Parking can also be quite tricky on the steep Barlow Hill, especially during busy times, so the pub hopes having an off-road space to park your car will be a welcome addition to the community. (Image - Macclesfield Nub News)

The addition of six to seven extra spaces means more people can enjoy Wincle, popular with walkers and beer-lovers alike (with an independent brewery located just down the road from the pub).

The Ship Inn is open every day of the week except Tuesday.
