Macclesfield College launches consultation on proposed merger with Cheshire College South & West
By Matthew Hancock-Bruce 25th Mar 2026
Two of Cheshire's leading further education colleges have launched a public consultation on a proposed merger.
The proposal would bring together Macclesfield College and Cheshire College - South & West, combining strengths, expertise and industry connections to unlock even greater opportunities for learners, apprentices and employers across the county and nationally.
At the heart of the plans is a shared vision that they are stronger together, delivering exceptional technical and professional education that responds to the evolving skills needs of Cheshire and beyond.
Rachel Kay, principal and chief executive of Macclesfield College, said: "Both colleges have proud histories of serving their communities and delivering high-quality education.
"This consultation allows our learners, staff, employers and local partners to help shape how we build on those strengths and create an even more ambitious future for further education in Cheshire."

If approved, the merger would:
- Expand curriculum choice and progression pathways
- Increase investment in industry-standard facilities and technology
- Strengthen partnerships with local and national employers
- Create enhanced opportunities for learners, apprentices and higher-level study
- Enhance development and progression opportunities for staff
- Build a financially robust and sustainable college for the future
- Drive community cohesion and maximise social value for our local communities
Leaders from both colleges believe that by working together, they can create a stronger platform for innovation, growth and learner success — while maintaining their commitment to serving local communities.
Jasbir Dhesi OBE, principal and chief executive of Cheshire College - South & West, said: "Cheshire has ambitious plans for economic growth and skills development, and further education has a vital role to play in that future.
"By bringing our colleges together, we have the opportunity to create a stronger, more resilient organisation that expands opportunity for learners, apprentices and employers across the region."
The public consultation opened on Wednesday, March 25, and will run until Tuesday, April 28.
Learners, staff, parents, employers and members of the community have an opportunity to have their say and help shape the future of the proposed organisation.
