The Virginmarys get political on heavy new single 'You're A Killer'

Proudly-Macclesfield musicians The Virginmarys have released their second single of the year.

You're A Killer is a punchy rock track, with politically-charged lyrics and an equally fiery vocal delivery from songwriter Ally Dickaty.

And it is not just the metaphors that stand out, it is the music too.

Dickaty shines from the start, with a pacy yet vocal-free opening, with an infections ten second surf-like guitar intro.

But pick just about any lyric from the three minute track, and it could describe the turbulent political landscape the UK (and the western world) has seen over the past few years. An interesting fact, given the track's roots hark back to three years ago.

Frustration at political inaction, and apathy with the whole political process are are big topics in the track. As is technologies impact on this. But comparing a lack of proper democracy to a gunshot is perhaps the most powerful part of the song.

And consistent throughout, is the big stadium rock sound you come to expect from The Virginmarys.

It can be easy to forget that given how much noise they make, that there is only two of them in the band.

The band describe the track themselves as a 'high intensity rock and roll single'.

While not confirmed to appear on their next - and currently untitled - album, You're A Killer has already proved popular and racked up thousands of streams.

You're A Killer follows March's single The Meds, which had a music video shot in Macclesfield. However, it is not known if the upcoming You're A Killer music video is also shot in their hometown.

The band have released four albums since 2013, and will go on a UK tour in October, following their first-ever tour of Sweden in the spring.

Their most recent gig was at Sheffield's Tramlines Festival at the weekend, and in April took part in the Macclesfield charity music festival Party in the Pews.

The Virginmarys have over 51,000 monthly listeners on Spotify alone.

The lyrics for the new track can be found below:

You're A Killer

I'm hearing the words but I don't see no action,

A room full of clowns with some loud interaction.

Working my bones and still earning a fraction,

I'm hooked to my phone like a fatal distraction.

What you see's not what you get,

Who you're with is not who you met.

I'm eating organic, cross the Atlantic,

Getting high off the fumes of a jumbo jet.

Information, in formation,

An idiot's guide to dividing the nation.

Grooming the youth to the point of sedation,

Where hearing the truth gives a strange sensation.

What you see's not what it seems,

The UK's sleeping sweet American dreams.

Democracy is a word shot from the mouth,

Of a Killer.

Of a Killer,

Of a Killer,

You're A Killer.

Same old news flash, same old story,

Same old bad guy, same old glory.

Same old labour, same old tory,

History, largely his story.

I am neither left nor right,

I am but a man who loves,

When democracy is a word shot from the mouth,

Of a Killer

Of a Killer,

Of a Killer,

You're A Killer
