UP CLOSE: With the baker for Macclesfield eatery All Things Nice
Macclesfield Nub News was founded on principles of supporting our community. This includes promoting Macclesfield shops, businesses, charities, clubs and sports groups. We will be profiling some of these companies and organisations in a regular feature called UP CLOSE, finding out what makes them tick.
Recent editions include an award-winning brewery, a world-renowned gin distillers from our town, and a guitar shop which is turning ten this year.
Today, we head to All Things Nice on Macclesfield's Chestergate, to speak to the baker who makes their bread which you can enjoy on their menu or buy to take whole loaves away.
Head Baker Dean Blackwell is one of six bakers who bake the sourdoughs, ryes and more loaves you can enjoy inside or outside of All Things Nice Macclesfield.
He's worked for All Things Nice since 2020, when they took on their Marple branch, later baking for their Macclesfield site which opened in September 2022.
Dean emphasises quality, freshness, and affordability when baking bread, which is an ethos which can be seen throughout their menu.
"We buy the best quality products that we can buy, and we hope that comes across in the food", he said.
"We don't cut corners; we use local suppliers."
"We pride ourselves on producing the best stuff for your body you can get."
The eatery offers everything from takeout lunches and cakes to a rotational international menu on weekend evenings.
Their newly-launched Grab & Go lunches, for example, are freshly prepared and ready to take out.
"We're trying to produce something where people can grab a freshly made sandwich, all made here in-house", Dean explains.
"It's all ready to go, so there's no queuing, no waiting."
A Grab & Go sandwich, cake and drink costs £8.50.
"We're trying to keep it reasonable for people to have not just once a week as a treat, but as their lunch."
This kind of fresh eatery culture is evocative of the European-style café.
"If you look at the ingredients on the back of some supermarket breads, the ingredients list is very long", he explained.
"It should be flour, water, salt and yeast."
A long-time baker by trade, Dean is passionate about his work, as indeed are the staff.
He speaks fondly of his five other All Things Nice bakers who are so serious about the craft that they spends their own time researching and making outside of opening hours.
All Things Nice Macclesfield is located on 10 Chestergate, in-between Express Hearing and Proper Sound.
