A new Japanese restaurant has enjoyed a successful start to life in Macclesfield.

Zumuku has been serving up sushi from the former home of Basilico for just over month now.

Currently only open for takeaways, managing director Edeward Cayton and franchisee Ka Meng San hope to welcome their first eat-in diners in February.

Edward said: "Every day we get calls from people asking when the restaurant is opening and how they can book a table!

"It' been good so far, we've been really well received.

"So many people have come in to collect and told us that they've been waiting for something like this for a long time.

"The feedback has been great. We work really hard to maintain a high quality."

Edward, 41, has been working in the hospitality industry since he was 15, starting as a kitchen porter at a Thai restaurant in Manchester.

Zumuku launched in 2017 and now boasts 12 restaurants and six dark kitchens.

Asked what drew them to Macclesfield, Edward said: "Macclesfield has always been on the radar but we could never quite find the right unit.

"Finally, all the stars aligned."

He added: "I feel we are really well suited to Chestergate.

"It's definitely an up-and-coming part of Macclesfield.

"We feel we really fit the area next to businesses like Suburban Green and Wood Fire Smoke.

"It's a really nice community to be a part of."

Edward and Ka Meng initially aimed to be ready to welcome diners in time for Christmas.

However, there was a lot more work required than they had expected.

So, they decided to get up and running with just the kitchen, taking their first orders on November 18.

This will help them fund the rest of the renovations, which includes plans for karaoke rooms upstairs.

"There isn't really anything like that in Cheshire," Edward said.

"With Zumuku, our aim is to provide really good quality Japanese product but in a casual setting where everyone is welcome."
