A woman who was banned from entering a Macclesfield pub because of her medical assistance dog is fighting for change.

Niamh MacLoughlin is calling on Wetherspoons to review their policies after she was denied service at the Society Rooms.

The 22-year-old visited recently with her assistance dog, Blu, who is trained to alert her when a medical episode is about to occur and then retrieve her medication.

However, she was denied entry and told she would not be served if she sat down.

Niamh said: "This wasn't just an inconvenience - it was discrimination, and it left me feeling stripped of dignity and inclusion in a place that should welcome everyone.

"It made me feel invalidated, anxious and deflated but also determined to fight for what's right especially for other people."

Niamh added: "I'm not seeking sympathy - I'm seeking change.

"No one should ever have to justify their disability or the presence of their assistance dog in a public space.

"I would like Wetherspoons to provide a formal apology and to update their policies that are in line with UK law and to educate their staff on assistance dog awareness."

Niamh visited the pub on Park Green on Tuesday, September 16, and was told by the duty manager that she would not be served if she sat down.

She says the manager refused to even look at Blu's public access certificate and a card outlining Niamh's legal rights under the Equality Act 2010.

"I have experienced some questioning before but never direct discrimination to this level," Niamh said.

"What made this even more disheartening is that I am a professional dog trainer myself - I have dedicated my career to understanding and supporting the bond between people and their dogs, especially those that change lives through their work.

"To be treated with such disregard despite my knowledge, preparation, and legitimate need, was both humiliating and painful."

JD Wetherspoon has been approached for comment.

People are saying it's a stupid rule, but that is the rule, as you have said there are loads of pubs that except dogs, go in them, I have an allergy to dogs, so for me its a great idea, itsa pity more don't do it, nothing worse than eating food with a dog looking at you

I understand that, once upon a time, a child was running around in a Wetherspoons pub garden and trod on a dog's tail. Understandably the dog bit, since when they have banned dogs. How about banning children who are often very badly behaved.

Why don't you go next door, don't want dogs in spoons, don't want kids either, can you imagine what type of dogs would come in, rottweilers, pit bulls etc, no keep dogs out and go next door

Weatherspoons have this ridiculous rule for no dogs where as every other pub in Macclesfield happily welcome them in, probably some stupid rule set by that terrible man Tim Martin

Wetherspoons Macclesfield are well known for this. The same thing happened to my retired neighbour a few months ago. They should change their policy but, if it were me, I would be spending my money in the numerous other pubs and cafes in Macc which do accept dogs, whether assistance or not.

I have never been in Macc Weatherspoons, and doubt I will any time soon. Nearly all the other pubs and bars allow dogs, whether pets or service dogs. Most even provide dog treats on the bar. Enjoy some of the friendly, inclusive pubs and bars with your best friend, and avoid 'Spoons.

Not only do I own my own service dog …. I also work for the assistance dog trust ….. this has got to stop …… they cannot deny you … we have had problems with this in our area ….. and we went to the local council and gain their support…… plus it’s not a blanket policy for this company… it’s down to the individual management…..
