Tributes have poured in following the death of a Macclesfield-born Formula One driver.

Guy Edwards has passed away at the age of 83.

The news was confirmed by fellow former racing driver, Derek Daly, on Friday, June 19.

Posting to X, he said: "Sad to tell you that Guy Edwards died today.

"Guy was my manager in F1 and F2. The Guinness and ICI deals were because of Guy.

"Some of you will know that he suffered a devastating stroke many years ago and has lived in the west of Ireland ever since.

"His ability to 'do the deal' supported so many race teams. He received the Queens Gallantry Medal for pulling Niki Lauda from his burning Ferrari in 1976.

"Up to the end he loved to chat about the old days. RIP my friend."

Between 1974 and 1977, Edwards participated in 17 Formula One World Championship Grand Prix events, starting 11 races.

Perhaps the most defining moment in his F1 career came on August 1, 1976, at the German Grand Prix.

Edwards was one of the first drivers to arrive at the scene when Niki Lauda suffered a near-fatal crash, helping to pull the defending world champion from his burning Ferrari.

For his bravery that day, Edwards was awarded a Queen's Gallantry Medal.

Outside of Formula One, Edwards competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans on 10 occasions, was crowned European F5000 champion in 1974 and secured several wins in the British Formula One Championship for Team March, RAM Racing and Charles Clowes Racing.

Following his death, tributes have poured in from across the racing world.

The social media account of the iconic Brands Hatch racing circuit posted: "We're sorry to hear that British racer Guy Edwards has died at the age of 83.

"Guy raced in F1, both internationally and in the British series, and entered F5000, World Sportscars, and the BTCC in a career which spanned the '60s to the '80s.
