A Macclesfield parliamentary candidate has revealed that it was due to recent proposed public service cuts by Cheshire East Council, that made them stand for parliament.

Christopher Wellavize is one of the record seven candidates running in Macclesfield this July 4 election.

Upon answering a question on cuts proposed by Cheshire East Council, Mr Wellavize revealed it was the 'mothballing' of Poynton and Bollington HWRC that led him to stand for parliament.

"This is the issue that got me involved in politics", he said.

Bollington Library and Bollington tip are both facing uncertain futures, after reports of them being cut have surfaced earlier this year. They both have become a hot issue in this election, particuarly the tips.

"At the beginning of this year, my wife came home from an Adlington Parish Council meeting and said that 'Cheshire East is to close the recycling centres.'

"And I said, 'we can't do that, we need those recycling centres'.

"These centres are run brilliantly, they are incredible efficient. People come along with their vehicles, full of stuff. Everything gets sorted. They are incentivised to sort everything.

"These centres are actually cost-effective, so to close them makes no sense financially.

"We know there will be more fly-tipping, a lot of the waste will go to general waste, Macclesfield Recycling Centre has got subsidies.

"We had a meeting at my garden centre [Prestbury Plant and Garden], where Cheshire East Councillors came along, to discuss ways in which we could keep these recycling centres open."

The 'SAVE BOLLINGTON TIP' campaign has captivated the community, with volunteers even collecting their own tip usage data. The uncertain future of the recycling centres has even led to a Bollington landmark being decorated against the tip's impending 'mothballing'.

For some candidates, they have had enough of Cheshire East Council as a whole. Three candidates, Stephen Broadhurst, Neil Christian and Dickie Fletcher have shown support to the 'Break free from Cheshire East Council' movement.

However, Mr Wellavize has not backed the public campaign and petition.

Macclesfield Nub News has previously asked every candidate for their views on the uncertain future for Poynton and Bollington HWRCs, and how they will incorporate it into their campaign.

Cheshire East Council will be contacted for comment for the latest on the tip closures, after the general election is over.

There is less than two days to go until the general election.

The polls open at 7am on July 4.
