Conservative candidate David Rutley - who was until parliament was dissolved on May 30 - Macclesfield's MP since 2010. He could be elected for a fifth time later this week.

A Macclesfield parliamentary candidate has praised and thanked his fellow candidates for dignified general election campaign.

David Rutley, who has won the past four parliamentary elections in Macclesfield, was speaking at the Tytherington School Under 30s General Election Hustings on Saturday.

He made the comments during his closing statement at the two-hour-long hustings.

"Thank you for today, and those who have organised it as well," he said.

Mr Rutley - the Conservative candidate for the July 4 election - is pictured on the far left of this image.

"It has been a tremendous honour, the greatest of my life to represent Macclesfield since 2010. And all the experiences I have been able to have. But we are getting on with the job.

"There's more to do, for you, your families and your communities. To make sure we have exciting career opportunities, we can tackle and improve mental health challenges. And also protecting the environment.

"With your support, I will go on to continue doing that job in the next parliament.

"But I would also just like to say a few other quick things.

He delivered his thanks to his fellow candidates whilst stood up, in one of the few times candidates stood up during the whole hustings.

"First of all, I would like to say a big thank you to everybody else who has been involved in this panel discussion and through this campaign. Except for some of perhaps some of Steve's excitable remarks, actually, this campaign has been incredibly clean, no personal attacks, and I think that sets a model of how we should be doing campaigns in this country."

The 'excitable remarks' likely referred to the Reform UK candidate Stephen Broadhurst, who gave passionate comments attacking both the Conservatives and Labour.

It is unsure what precisely Mr Rutley was referring to about the Reform candidate's words. However, during the Hustings Mr Broadhurst criticised Mr Rutley for travelling across the world in his Junior Minister role, and Mr Broadhurst also criticised Labour candidate Tim Roca for his role at Westminster City Council. Before Mr Broadhurst reiterated that he would be an MP 'for Macclesfield.

Mr Rutley, speaking to an audience of predominantly young people finished off his closing statement with: "A huge thank you to all of them, and I hope through his experience and your interest in politics here, it will inspire you to get more involved in the community, and I wish you every success in your endeavours. Thank you very much."

The Macclesfield resident will also be at Macclesfield's second and final election hustings, set to take place tonight at St. Michael's Church.

The Conservative candidate is one of seven on the ballot paper this Thursday.

Macclesfield will go to the polls on July 4 from 7am to 10pm.

The candidates are: Stephen Broadhurst (Reform UK), Dickie Fletcher (Social Democratic Party), Neil Christian (Liberal Democrats), Amanda Iremonger (Green Party), Tim Roca (Labour Party), David Rutley (Conservatives), Christopher Wellavize (Independent).
