'Our generation has failed you': Macclesfield MP candidate apologises to young people
A Macclesfield parliamentary candidate has said sorry to 'millennials' and 'gen Z', on behalf of her generation,
Amanda Iremonger, one of seven candidates in this Thursday's general election, apologised for her generation's failings in addressing the climate crisis and the world they have created for young people.
The Green Party candidate made the apology in her opening speech, at Saturday's General Election hustings at Tytherington School, aimed at those aged under 30.
"It is a pleasure to see so many young people in the audience today," she said.
"But I have to start by saying, our generation has failed you.
"In 1960s, scientists told us that man-made production of CO2 was creating the greenhouse effect.
"By the 1990s, it was clear it was global warming and predicted it would be catastrophic.
"But we kept on using more resources, emitting more CO2, and hoping it would all go away.
"And I am sorry we have not nurtured our young better. Today we put pressure on these young ones, so they face a children's mental health crisis, which has been exacerbated by the pandemic.
"My generation had further education for free, and a freedom to live across the EU. You don't get that.
"And I am sorry our generation has failed to create a more fair and equal society, where we support and care for the most vulnerable, rather than punishing and [INAUDIBLE] them.
"The good news is that I bring real hope, and real change. With the Green Party, you get honesty and transparency.
"So I will tell you that yes, we are facing a number of crises, not just the climate emergency, in health, social care, [sic] housing, the vulnerable in poverty and the pollution of our rivers and seas. And yes, we can take steps to address these. But these steps will cost money.
"In the Green Party manifesto, we have set out our costs and how to fund them. You can't just have your cake and eat it. No matter how much we'd like that,
"You can trust me to be honest and constructive today. That is how the Green Party will always be, and I hope I can trust your vote coming on July 4."
The left-leaning candidate is running for parliament for the first time.
The Knutsford resident will also be at Macclesfield's second and final election hustings, set to take place tonight at St. Michael's Church.
Macclesfield will go to the polls on July 4 from 7am to 10pm.
The candidates are: Stephen Broadhurst (Reform UK), Dickie Fletcher (Social Democratic Party), Neil Christian (Liberal Democrats), Amanda Iremonger (Green Party), Tim Roca (Labour Party), David Rutley (Conservatives), Christopher Wellavize (Independent).
