A Broken Cross grandad who has been running marathons for 27 years, will take on the London Marathon again this weekend.

Retired grocer Harry Newton (84) will take on this Sunday's 26.2 miles run, in the hopes of raising money for a Macclesfield good cause.

"On 2nd October 2022 I will again be running in the TCS London Marathon as a Male V80, hoping to raise a goodly amount for East Cheshire Hospice," he said.

"The caring staff at East Cheshire Hospice can only do their invaluable work with donations and support from people like you and me.

"Your generous donations will help keep my going when the going gets tough in those last few miles."

His time in 2021's marathon was five hours and 20 minutes.

Last year he raised over £3400 for The Christie Macclesfield, and this year he hopes to raise at least a grand for his chosen charity.

A cancer survivor himself, he has a great admiration for the work East Cheshire Hospice does, supporting those directly affected with life-limiting illnesses.

The lymphoma patient recorded a personal best in the London Marathon 3:52:30 in 2008 - the same year as he was diagnosed with cancer.

Motivated great-grandad Harry spends his time in Macclesfield Male Voice Choir and training for his next marathon.

The super-grandad was 57 when he completed his first marathon, and credits the support of his wife Phyllis, two sons, one daughter, nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
