It may be the Treacle Market this weekend, but another business carrying Macclesfield's 'Treacletown' moniker won't be open.

The Treacle Tap, a micropub on Sunderland Street, has shut down for good.

The bar had initially shut down in August 2022, after being ran by the bar's creators The Beer Parlours for 12 years.

The unit then lay dormant for over a year.

But then Buxton Brewery swooped in to reopen the bar and retain the brandname on December 1 2023.

Despite this, the new era for The Treacle Tap has been put to a halt, less than five months after it reopened.

Macclesfield Nub News reached out to Buxton Brewery for comment.

"We would like to thank the customers that visited us in our short tenure and we are sorry that they have lost their local," said Managing Director Dom Metcalfe.

"The Treacle Tap is an iconic bar but I sadly don't think it is viable as a bar in a post-COVID hospitality world where operating costs are so much higher in terms of staff wages and energy, consumer confidence and disposable income is very low, government support is non existent and the general hospitality industry in Macclesfield as a town, is somewhat lacklustre."

The premises, of 43 Sunderland Street.

Despite the closure, Sunderland Street is still served by bars. The Jolly Sailor pub is on the same side of the road as The Treacle Tap, as is The George and Dragon.

Across the road is The Snowgoose, and a new bar is about to open on Sunderland Street called G+L Muckers.
