The Ukrainian flag is up on Macclesfield Town Hall, two-years to the day since the full-scale invasion of the Eastern European country.

A statement from Cheshire East Council said: "On the second anniversary of Russia's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2024, Cheshire East Council is joining the international community in condemning this act of aggression and expressing unwavering support for the Ukrainian people."

Leader of Cheshire East Council, councillor Sam Corcoran, said: "The people of Ukraine have displayed incredible courage and resilience in the face of unimaginable suffering at the hands of the repressive and oppressive regime in Russia.

"The Ukrainians continuing fight for freedom and democracy is an inspiration to us all and together, we can stand with Ukraine and send a powerful message of peace, democracy, and hope - Slava Ukraini."

Since the start of the invasion 756 Ukrainian guests have stayed in the Cheshire East borough as part of the Homes for Ukraine scheme, with the support of 456 sponsors.

Councillor Corcoran added: "The success of the Homes for Ukraine Scheme here is a direct result of the extraordinary efforts of our residents. From offering spare rooms to donating essentials, volunteering their time, and simply welcoming newcomers with open arms, their actions have made a world of difference.

"This is a community in Cheshire East that truly stands together, and I am incredibly proud to be a part of it."

If you want to offer a home to people fleeing Ukraine, you can still become a sponsor as part of the Homes for Ukraine scheme and register your interest on the government website.
