A Macclesfield resident is doing yet another fundraiser for charity.
Ian Heslop is doing two more long distance runs for Cardiac Risk in the Young this year, having done five runs in the past year-and-a-half for the cardiac arrest support and cardiac screening charity.
Ian chose to fundraise thousands of pounds in charity runs for Cardiac Risk in the Young, in memory of Mia Jennings (d. 2023), the late Macclesfield teenager who was a friend of his daughters.
The retail worker will be running The Great North Run in Newcastle next weekend, which is the most-entered half-marathon in the world, with Ian being one of 60,000 runners.
Following this, Ian will take on The Great South Run in Portsmouth next October. The latter location will have personal significance for Ian, as it his home town.
"I will be running around all my own haunts, where I have staggered home overnight," he joked.
Ian, who you can find behind the counter at Macclesfield good cause The Corner Plot, of Park Lane, is also a regular attendee of Macclesfield Parkrun. In total, he has done 130 Parkruns, and also took on a 10k in Salford this week as part of his training.
"If you want to donate, come on down to The Corner Plot to donate", said Ian.
"Thank you for supporting such a great charity. It is great to get the word out there, as well as raising money for project to get heart screening for 18-30 year olds.
"My kids have all been screened since Mia passed away."
Ian, who has worked at The Corner Plot since it reopened, used to work in entertainment.
Ian will be powered on his runs by Macclesfield's Crag Spring Water, and have the support of his family as well as his colleagues at The Corner Plot.
"I keep running as it is good for my fitness and mental health," he added.
You can donate cash in person at The Corner Plot, 119 Park Lane, Macclesfield SK11 6UA.
Cardiac Risk in the Young was contacted for comment.
Chief Executive of the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) Dr Steven Cox said,
"It's just incredible to see how much amazing fundraising is taken place for CRY, in memory of local teenager, Mia Jennings – who died suddenly from a previously undiagnosed heart condition, aged just 19. What an amazing community you have, in and around Macclesfield.
"I'm therefore privileged to be able to give a 'shout out' to yet another of these brilliant fundraisers, Ian Heslop, as he embarks on two further fundraising events for CRY – his commitment is wonderful and we're so grateful for his efforts.
"To put this all into context, every week, 12 apparently fit and healthy young (aged 35 and under) people in the UK die suddenly from a previously undiagnosed heart condition. In 80% of these cases, there will have been no signs or symptoms of a heart defect until it is too late, which is why CRY believes screening is so vitally important (particularly for those involved in regular, physical activity). As such, CRY now tests around 27,000 young people each year, aged between 14 and 35.
"As CRY receives no government funding, our UK-wide screening programme is only possible because of the backing CRY receives from families, friends and communities across the UK, enabling us to provide this service free to the public.
Dr Cox concludes; "In addition to our pioneering screening programme, CRY also funds a world-renowned research centre in London and a unique, nationwide Bereavement Support network."
