Lack of public transport usage and work from home trends are among the key takeaways from the Census 2021's data on our local workforce.

The survey filled in by most Maxonians and Cheshire East residents in March 2021, has just had a slew of data released for it.

You can read the full data here, but here is our breakdown of the numbers on our local working economy.

Despite the climate crisis and Cheshire East Council encouraging active travel, drivers still rule the roads when it comes to transport to work.

48.5% of Cheshire East's 16+ workforce drive their own car or van to their place of work.

Macclesfield Upton Priory and Greenside has the highest concentration of those who drive themselves work, with 50.0% doing so. That's one in two.

Just 1.5% of employees in Central Macclesfield use the train to get to work. 0.8% in Cheshire East used the rails to get to work.

7.2% of borough residents walk to work, and 16.6% of Central Macclesfield residents walk around the town centre to their place of work.

Just 1.8% of Cheshire East's workforce get on their bicycle to work.

However, that is higher than most of Cheshire East's neighbouring counties barring the more city-like Trafford and Manchesster, where infrastructure is stronger.

0.7% in Cheshire East use the bus to get to work. 1.1% of this figure are bus users based in Central Macclesfield. Every other area has less than one per cent riding the bus to work, with 0.0% doing so in Prestbury and Adlington.

However, just four months after the Census was revealed, Cheshire East confirmed they were in the bottom 10 local authority areas for people (including non-workers) using buses. So these figures should come as no surprise.

Macclesfield South & Lyme Green has the highest number of workers using taxis in Macclesfield, with 1.3% of those employed using private hire or Uber to get to work.

To further inform Cheshire East Council's public transport choices, 30.7% travel of Cheshire East's workforce travels less than 6.21371 miles to work. However, this survey was taken in March 2021 when some COVID-restrictions were still in place about travelling to work when only necessary.

Work from home figures suggest that exactly a third of Central Macclesfield workers work from home.

Prestbury and Adlington has the highest proportion of WFH workers across Macclesfield, with 53.3%.

Given the amount of rich people and celebrities that work in this ward, this figure should not come as a surprise.

However, one must keep in mind that when this survey was conducted in March 2021, the UK was in the final weeks of the third COVID-19 lockdown. So some people's circumstances may have changed since.

Second place is Macclesfield Tytherington and Bollinbrook, where 44.7% of residents work from home.

Macclesfield South and Lyme Green has the least amount of people working in their house (26.3%), but this area contains leafy Lyme Green with not many residents and places where people live like the Moss Estate with not many nearby businesses.

66.0% of Central Macclesfield residents are in employment or full-time education.

66.0% of Central Macclesfield residents are in employment or full-time education.

The worst Macclesfield area rate for those in full-time employment is Prestbury and Adlington, with 49.3%. However, as this area is known to be popular with retirees and those with lots of money, the figure suggests affluence rather than deprivation.

Every other ward in Macclesfield had at least 55.7% in full-time employment or education. The Cheshire East average was 58.7%.

As a result, Cheshire East betters many neighbouring areas when it comes to a low unemployment rate, having more in work than Cheshire West and Cheshire, High Peak, Newcastle-under-Lyme, and even the cities of Manchester and Stoke-on-Trent.
