Cheshire East has given the go-ahead for a three-storey apartment block for specialist supported housing on a derelict site in Macclesfield.
The 10 self-contained flats will be built on land which previously housed two semi-detached buildings at 151 London Road.
The site is opposite a car dealership and close to a Co-op and Macclesfield Football Club.
Each apartment will have its own kitchen/living area, bedroom and bathroom, and residents will have access to communal care facilities as and when needed, with staff on site 24/7.
The case officer states in the planning report: "The site is derelict and is in a very poor state of decline and detracts significantly from the character of the area.
"The proposal will contribute to the regeneration of the area through the construction of a development providing an active frontage and bringing a residential use to a vacant brownfield site, that has been vacant for many years."
The accommodation will be managed by a specialist care company with staff on site round the clock.
The officer said there is an identified need for such accommodation.
The proposal has been supported by the council's adult and social care commissioning team which states, in the report: "We are supportive of this development, from a commissioning perspective, to meet the needs of individuals with mental health support needs and Cheshire East Council and the integrated care board (NHS) have been jointly involved in discussions around this proposal."
Macclesfield Civic Association expressed mixed views.
"We welcome this form of provision and its location in an area of mixed uses, close to shops and recreational facilities and accessible by public transport," it stated in the report.
But it had reservations regarding the scale and mass of the building saying it would be 'overbearing and would be over prominent in the street scene' and also raised concerns about just five parking spaces.
Five letters of objection were sent to the council from residents.
The concerns included the entrance of the site onto the busy A523 and that it crosses a busy section of footway.
An objector also said the loud music and noise from PA system, light pollution and noise from crowds from the nearby football stadium mean this is not a suitable location for vulnerable people.
They also said there are already lots of supported living facilities in the Macclesfield area.
The site already has planning permission for a three-storey building for nine open market one-bed flats which was approved in May of last year but not built.
This latest application for the specialist supported accommodation was approved this week by a planning officer under delegated authority.
