'20s plenty' - Macclesfield councillor looking to improve road safety following latest fatality
By Matthew Hancock-Bruce 10th Oct 2026
A Macclesfield councillor is looking to improve road safety.
John Knight of the Green Party is calling on Cheshire East Council's highways department to look into the potential of introducing lower speed limits, similar to those seen across Wales.
It comes with 59 deaths having been recorded on Cheshire East roads over the past five years, including a 21-year-old woman on Friday, October 9, and a 68-year-old pedestrian in Macclesfield in September.
The motion, which is to be raised at the council meeting on Wednesday, October 14, reads: "Evidence from Wales and many local authorities in Scotland and England, who have revised default urban speed limits, shows that collisions and casualties have fallen significantly and that other benefits have been achieved (not least reduced insurance costs).
"We call on Cheshire East Council's highways department to advise how we could reap similar benefits and determine a costed plan for implementation."

Councillor Knight said: "In my ward of Macclesfield Central, we have a campaign calling for slower speeds on Ryles Park Road, and there have been similar calls for Park Lane and Bond Street, including outside Parkroyal Community School.
"This motion does not call for us to immediately implement 20mph in urban areas, it asks for our team to assess the best way we can achieve the benefits being seen across the UK.
"Once we know the benefits we can achieve, what that will cost in implementation, but also what benefit we will reap financially over years to come, we will have a choice which is not open to us today.
"Let's move forward with looking to improve road safety for all residents."
