Tennis: Macclesfield Paralympic medal hangs in balance after play halted

A Macclesfield Paralympian has had his shot at winning a medal interrupted.

Antony Cotterill's was hoping to win the bronze medal doubles match with partner Andy Lapthorne today.

Unfortunately, play has been suspended due to heat, during the fourth set.

We previously reported that the Maxonian wears a cooling device to prevent him reacing 'dangerously high temperatures'.

And it appears 96% humidity and 18C in Tokyo currently is unsuitable for play.

The mixed quad doubles wheelchair tennis pair including the Macclesfield resident, were hoping to bring a medal back to our town by beating Koji Sugeno and Mitsuteru Moroishi of Japan.

It is unclear if play will resume today, where the match was stopped just after 9:30pm local time.

A rematch could happen any time before the end of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, which was set to finish on Sunday, 5 September.

It unclear if the current scores will be held, which saw Ant and his British double partner losing two sets to one.

There is also the possibility that all four competitors could share a medal, if players are unable to return to the court.

The Macclesfield tennis player had been on Ariake Tennis Court 1 for 28 minutes, until Australian Umpire Mather McAleer confirmed termination of play.

Antony broke his neck after falling into a shallow swimming pool in September 2003, he began playing wheelchair tennis just months later in 2004.

Macclesfield Nub News will continue to provide updates.

If Antony was to win, it would be the third medal from the Macclesfield area at the 16th Summer Paralympics.

Yesterday, Bollington swimmer Stephen Clegg bagged his second bronze of the games.
