A wooden artwork has been created to raise money for a teacher diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease.

Rob Hasler, who teaches year four at Dean Valley Community Primary School, was recently diagnosed with MND - an incurable disease which impacts mobility and can cause difficulties with speech, swallowing and breathing.

To help Rob's family prepare for what is to come, his friend of 30 years Stewart Morton-Collings has created a White Nancy woodcut which is to be raffled off.

Stewart said: "Rob's diagnosis is heart breaking as it's a condition with no known cure.

"Rob is one of the fittest people we know. Part of Macclesfield Harriers he's completed many marathons over the years, including the London Marathon a few years ago.

"This will all stop now as he concentrates on managing his condition and tries to slow down the deterioration in his body.

"He's already noticing atrophy in some of his muscles, and he's working hard to combat this, all whilst still teaching at Dean Valley Primary School.

"Everyone likes to think that they have all the time in the world, and it's only when we're faced with something like this that you're reminded how fragile health can be."

Stewart and his wife Jacqueline run For Me & For You, a laser cutting and artwork studio on Gunco Lane.

For their latest creation, they decided to make a woodcut White Nancy piece to raffle off.

The local landmark has been a focal point of fundraising efforts, with the staff of Dean Valley planning to climb it 2,025 in 2025.

"We want to raise as much money as possible," said Stewart.

"This money will go towards helping the family prepare for the future.

"They will need to move house, buy specialist equipment for their home, invest in a new car to get around.

"Everything that they thought they'd be able to do as they grow older has now had to change."

The winner to be announced at this month's Treacle Market, on February 23.

A GoFundMe page has also been set up for Rob, with more than £25,000 donated so far.
