Two Co-op Food stores in Macclesfield have donated cash to grassroots sport.

The Co-op stores on Buxton Road and Hurdsfield Road have donated £300 to Hurdsfield Phoenix FC.

Co-op Buxton Road Store Manager Sam Bradley explained why they chose to support the local youth football team.

"Co-op stores each have a budget they can use to support a local cause of their choice over the year," said Sam.

"This is in addition to the money Co-op members raise by doing their shop.

"Hurdsfield Phoenix are a local football team between Buxton Road and Hurdsfield Road store, so a lot of the parents of the players are customers of both stores that we see day-in and day-out. So it was one to go for in terms of giving back to the community.

"Supporting them aligns with our values. It is about improving people's wellbeing and creating opportunities for young people that make a difference, co-operating for a better world."

"They were so pleased to be chosen, £300 goes a long way for them for providing equipment and kit for not just one team but two or three teams."

The football club, of Hulley Road, had this to say as thanks: "Hurdsfield Phoenix Football Club would like to thank Buxton Road Co-op and Hurdsfield Road Co-op for their kind donation to the Football Club."

"This will go towards purchasing equipment for three of the teams, like small goals for drills, ladders for step drills, respect rope, and footballs."

"The U11s Giants and Tigers and U14s Titans are extremely grateful."
