Councillors from Macclesfield and Pott Shrigley comment on whether Boris Johnson should go

Multiple Macclesfield area Labour councillors are pressing for Prime Minister Boris Johnson to quit.

While Macclesfield's Conservative MP David Rutley has not responded to Macc Nub's calls or emails, Labour figures from the Macclesfield area have called on the PM to resign.

According to Cheshire East Council's Labour councillors 'Johnson is bringing all politicians into disrepute and Conservative MPs should have the backbone to boot him out'.

Civil servant Sue Gray's update report into allegations of parties at Downing Street during the lockdown period, refers to "failures of leadership and judgement by different parts of No 10."

.

The Metropolitan Police is now investigating 12 of these events.

Macclesfield Labour councillor Nick Mannion told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: "By clinging on he's bringing all of us into disrepute regardless of what political persuasion we are."

The Macclesfield West and Ivy resident added: "The only person who can sack the Prime Minister is the party he represents, so I just wonder how many Conservative MPs will have the courage to tell him to go and to go now."

Mannion, who is also Cheshire East Council's Chair of the Economy and Growth Committee, has served our town since May 2015.

Labour group leader Sam Corcoran said Tory MPs should force Boris Johnson out.

"Andrew Mitchell and former Conservative Prime Minister Theresa May clearly have no confidence in the Prime Minister, but Operation 'Save Big Dog' was in operation with several Conservatives asking for other matters to take priority – Brexit, Ukraine and energy prices," said Cllr Corcoran.

"However, perhaps the most significant part was the empty spaces on the Conservative benches.

"There are far too many Conservative MPs who won't turn out to support the PM, but don't have the backbone to write a letter to get rid of him."

Cllr Janet Clowes, Conservative group leader on Cheshire East Council, has already lost one councillor because of 'partygate'.

Cllr Nicky Wylie, a nurse who has worked with the NHS and the vaccination programme throughout the pandemic, quit the Conservative Party because of the allegations of partying at Downing Street.

The Poynton East and Pott Shrigley councillor now sits as a non-grouped independent on the council, after she quit last week over 'Partygate.

Speaking after the publication of the Sue Gray report, Tory Cllr Clowes said: "We welcome the interim report from Sue Gray but at the current time, in light of the police investigations that are still ongoing, it would be inappropriate to make any comment at this time."

In Westminster, the current MP letter number to trigger the PM to step down remains unknown.
