Macclesfield: Everything You Need To Know About May's Treacle Market This Weekend

By Alex Greensmith

28th May 2021 | Local News

This weekend sees Macclesfield's Treacle Market back on the streets for the second time this year.

As with April's event, organisers will be taking it cautiously with a smaller market than pre-pandemic, but larger than last month's

Being mindful of the roadmap out of lockdown, organisers hope to have about 80 stalls radiating from Market Place and the streets around.

Despite the smaller feel, it will still celebrate the usual enticing Treacle Mix of exceptional food and drink, unique crafts and vintage finds.

New additions include The Old Butter Market, located next to the Old Police Station. It will be open to Treaclers for the first time since before the first lockdown.

Treacle organisers kindly ask visitors to wear a mask whilst shopping in there. The big doors will be wide open for ample ventilation, and indoor visitors are asked to use the NHS App QR code on the Old Butter Market door.

Treacle Market shoppers from Macclesfield and further afar can visit from 10am to 3.30pm, on Sunday May 30.

Another new stall includes ice cream provided by Ginger's Comfort this month.

The dairy specialists are renowned for their unusual, delicious flavours and you will find them outside the Butter Market at the side of the Town Hall.

Elsewhere for the sweet-toothed, you will once again be able to sample gorgeous treacle based goodies from Macc CIC Treacle Town Treats in Market Place.

Castle Street of course, remains largely out of bounds with the ongoing works. So if this is your first Treacle of 2021, the layout of your favourite stall may have changed.

As a result, shoppers should explore all the market streets from Exchange St round to the end of Chestergate, with many food stalls now placed at the side of the Town Hall.

Bank Holiday weekend will be a fantastic time to do some market shopping and support the many Macclesfield businesses that will be open on that day. There will be enticing street food stalls such as paella, pizza and Thai food.

Visitors may wish to take their lunch and sit on the St. Michael's church lawns. Meanwhile, green-thumbed Maxonian's and gardeners may wish to bring along seedlings to the plant swap in the churchyard this month.

"We are so pleased to be trading again on Macc's streets", says organiser Jane Munro.

"And we know from previously how sensible and courteous our visitors are as they move around the market whilst social distancing or wearing a mask whilst queuing."

"This is totally in line with the ethos of the market which is very much about being  part of the town's community, looking out for each other, Treacle traders and supporting the local businesses that are open on that day".

As the impact of falling Covid numbers is felt, the organisers hope in line with predicted lifting of restrictions they will be delivering a more normal Treacle Market next month.

And with the addition of a few new stalls for May, the Treacle Market is certainly on track to return to normal numbers of vendors pushing triple figures.

The Treacle Market will take place this Sunday on May 30, the day before Bank Holiday Monday.

Next month's Treacle Market will take place on June 27.
