Macclesfield hustings: Quickfire 'yes/no' round on Brexit, Danes Moss and women's spaces

Mixed reactions to 'the Brexit question' from Macclesfield MP hopefuls.

A quick fire round of questions during a Macclesfield general election hustings split both the candidates and the audience.

The trio of questions came during the second hustings at Macclesfield's St. Michael's Church, Market Place, on Monday evening.

The candidates were asked three yes/no questions, for which the answers can be found below. We have included each candidate's answer in the order they were given.

The candidates political affiliations is as follows: Stephen Broadhurst (RFM), Dickie Fletcher (SDP), Neil Christian (LIB), Amanda Iremonger (GRN), Tim Roca (LAB), David Rutley (CON), Christopher Wellavize (IND).

The 'SAVE DANES MOSS' campaign (supported by Cheshire Wildlife Trust) wants to stop the current plans for nearly 1000 houses, retail units and a link road on the northern section of the largest lowland raised peatbog in Cheshire. Do you support the campaign?

'SAVE DANES MOSS' is a campaign to protect a beauty spot in south Macclesfield near the Danes Moss Nature Reserve.

Christopher Wellavize: Yes

Dickie Fletcher: Yes

Stephen Broadhurst: I have done yes

Neil Christian: Yes

Amanda Iremonger: Yes, frequently

Tim Roca: Remain every day and twice til' Sunday

Stephen Broadhurst: You are going to love me then, leave

Dickie Fletcher: Emphatically leave

Neil Christian: Obviously remain

David Rutley: I voted remain but look we have been through two elections and [INAUDIBLE DUE TO GROANS FROM AUDIENCE] I vote to leave

Amanda Iremonger: I obviously voted for remain

Christopher Wellavize: I've never left. [remain]

Will you protect women's rights to single sex spaces, from any and all males, regardless of whether they hold a gender recognition certificate?

Stephen Broadhurst: Yes

Dickie Fletcher: Absolutely

Neil Christian: No

David Rutley: [INAUDIBLE due to audience response to the three previous answers]

Amanda Iremonger: I will protect women and girls in some form of context of this, 8 million women face domestic abuse in this country. On this question I think it is a distraction [microphone cut]

Christopher Wellavize: Yes

Tim Roca: Yes, but there is more context to this question [mixture of groans, heckles, and applause from audience]

Macclesfield will go to the polls on Thursday, July 4 from 7am to 10pm.

The candidates are: Stephen Broadhurst (Reform UK), Dickie Fletcher (Social Democratic Party), Neil Christian (Liberal Democrats), Amanda Iremonger (Green Party), Tim Roca (Labour Party), David Rutley (Conservatives), Christopher Wellavize (Independent).
