A Macclesfield school has revealed the facemasks will be staying on, even though term ends just days after when face coverings will still be required by the government.

Tytherington School announced the decision earlier today online.

Despite the lifting of coronavirus restrictions on July 19, there is a growing concern that many institutions and indoor places should keep facemasks on.

Their headteacher Mr Emmanuel Botwe had this to say:

"Many thanks for your ongoing support and patience during this challenging time. You will be aware that over the last few weeks, there has been a significant spike in the number of reported cases of covid-19 amongst young people in the local area. This has led to many students being asked to self-isolate.

"This morning I met with representatives from the local public health team to review the mitigations in school for the final week of term.

"On the advice of the Director of Public Health, all students and staff will continue to be required to wear masks in all indoor school venues (apart from PE) until the end of this term. This includes classrooms.

"We have a list of students who were exempt from mask wearing and they will not be required to wear a mask.

"Masks should also continue to be worn on school buses. We will also continue to operate a year group bubble system at break and lunch time. These measures will come to an end after the final day of term which is on Friday 23rd July."

The Headteacher also thanked parents for their continued help and support.

Facemasks will stay on for the final two days of term, when school's out until the afternoon of July 21.

It is currently unknown if the masks used to protect against coronavirus will be used at the Manchester Road school again come September.

Latest data for the seven days up to July 8 suggests Macclesfield Tytherington currently has at least 16 active coronavirus cases.

This is significantly less by the 42 cases each at neighbouring Central Macclesfield and Macclesfield East & Hurdsfield.

Many other schools in Macclesfield and the surrounding area are expected to announce similar measures for the last days before the summer holidays.

Earlier in the day, we reported of drivers not wearing seatbelts on Manchester Road, which is the same street as Tytherington School.
