Monday 9th June

SciBar is science in a bar - an invited speaker gives a talk on a scientific topic while people enjoy a drink or meal, with a Q&A afterwards. Bollington SciBar takes place at the Vale Inn in Bollington.
The speaker in June is Dr Donna Lloyd, Senior Lecturer in Cognitive Neuroscience, University of Manchester
Topic of the talk: Current estimates suggest that 1.5 billion people globally suffer from chronic pain and yet it remains one of the most poorly managed health conditions. Drug therapies are largely ineffective and often have distressing side effects with the possibility of addiction making them unfeasible in the long term. Fortunately, thanks to the advent of human neuroimaging, we now know more about how pain is processed in the brain, and importantly, how it can be manipulated to make us feel less pain. In this talk, Donna will show how we can harness the brain's own power to reduce the experience of pain in chronic conditions such as phantom limb pain and low back pain, and how technology is being used to provide alternative therapies for the management of long-term pain.
No charge, all welcome. Vale Inn, Adlington Road, talk begins 6.30pm.
