Macclesfield Treacle Market celebrates eleventh birthday, new organisers announced

Macclesfield's Treacle Market will be celebrating their 10th and 11th birthday at the same time this weekend - after having their calendar of monthly markets scuppered by the pandemic.

Throughout 2020, the Treacle Market trod carefully and always prioritised public safety in delivering the market.

This meant they did not trade in July last year, and missed the chance to commemorate their 10th birthday, like so many others who missed significant celebrations and anniversaries.

So this Sunday sees the 11th Birthday of the beloved Macclesfield market. As COVID-19 restrictions are lifted they still won't be 'going mad', with less than 90 stalls (normally over 100) but hope traders will push the boat out with decorations on their stalls.

There will be the usual enticing mix of quality antiques, crafts and delicious things to eat.

There will also be the hot street food area on St Michael's Church lawns - the perfect spot for a Treacle picnic.

And the renowned Treacle music will be back, which saw the debut of new Macclesfield band The Perplexers last month.

This month sees new faces in the organisation side of the event too.

After eleven years, the founder of the Treacle Market Jane Munro will be taking a backseat after eleven years.

Becky and Andy Thompson, will replace Jane, after they have been helping at Treacle for the last few months, donning the orange High Vis alongside other volunteers to ensure visitors and stall-owners have felt safe whilst on Market Place during uncertain times.

The organisers of Macc Hospitality have now joined forces with organiser Jane Munro and will be rolling up their sleeves on a permanent basis to deliver the Treacle Market.

Jane will still be behind the scenes with the skills honed from the last 11 years at the Treacle helm, but all enquiries should now primarily go to [email protected].

Jane had this to say to Macclesfield Nub News, as the outgoing Head Organiser.

"Treacle can be tough on a wet Winter's day but when the sun is out and visitors are tapping their

feet by the band or picnicking on the Church lawns I simply wouldn't be anywhere else in the world," she said.

"The Treacle family is made up of wonderful, mutually supportive traders and I feel so lucky to have been around such talented and creative people, doing what I have been for all these years.

"The loyalty of Macc people who have supported us in all weather is just incredible and I will miss the many friends I have made standing on the cobbles in Market Place.

"But it's time to take a back seat and Andy and Becky have many great ideas on how to build on that solid Treacle foundation. I am excited to see what comes next."

Becky and Andy bring not only their pertinent skills and experience, but a real love for the town where they live and a determination to ensure that Treacle continues to be at the heart of the Macclesfield community.

Becky said: "In the early days Treacle Market actually pioneered the artisan type market that is more widespread now, but has always stuck to it's early values and distinctive style.

"While earning a national reputation it has stayed a valued part of the town itself. That's why we are so keen to be involved.

"We look forward to carrying on that tradition of working with other stakeholders, Cheshire East Council and Macclesfield Town Council. Working towards a positive future for the town as we emerge from COVID-19 restrictions."

Macclesfield Nub News commends Jane for her 11 years of service at the Market, which has put our town on the map.

The July 25 Treacle Market will be held from 10am-3:30pm.
